Honorary Freeman Professor Philip Ogden

On Thursday 19th September, the Master Entrepreneur, Hon. Gp. Capt Peter LR Hewitt. JP, admitted Professor Philip Ogden FAcSS as an Honorary Freeman.

Professor Philip Ernest Ogden, Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and lately Master of the Drapers’ Company, is an eminent academic, with degrees from the Universities of Durham and Oxford, who has spent the majority of his career at Queen Mary University of London, founded by the Drapers’ Company in the nineteenth century.

At Queen Mary, he was appointed to a Chair in Human Geography and served as Vice Principal for the Humanities and Social Sciences, as Senior Vice Principal and then as Senior Adviser to the Principal, with particular responsibility for the oversight of major capital projects.

As Master Draper, Professor Odgen was instrumental in championing the Company’s friendship with the Guild of Entrepreneurs; he was a key supporter and contributor to the Raleigh 400 events of 2018 – promoting transatlantic business studies, human geography and history; and has more recently been instrumental in forging a strong partnership with Queen Mary in connection with the Entrepreneurs’ Annual Lecture.

He purposefully declaimed the Freemen’s Oath in the wood-panelled Court Room of Pewterers’ Hall, witnessed by the Court, Freemen and guests. ‎The Master spoke warmly to congratulate Professor Ogden, citing his unswerving support for the Guild of Entrepreneurs, especially to its educational endeavours. It was, the Master said, his privilege to admit Philip formally into the Honorary Freedom.

In particular, the Master praised Philip’s work in support of the Annual Lecture, and looked forward with anticipation to hearing Professor Ogden speak on behalf of the guests at the September Court Dinner.

Notes: the Court may, at its discretion, elect suitable persons to the Honorary Freedom of the Guild‎. Persons of eminance in the field of entrepreneurship, or those who have offered particular support to the Guild or Entrepreneurs or to its charity, may be considered.

Professor Philip Ogden was elected to the Freedom at a meeting of the Court of the Guild of Entrepreneurs on 18th July, 2019, and becomes the second Honorary Freeman Entrepreneur. Barbara, Lady Judge, CBE, was admitted as the first Honorary Freeman Entrepreneur in September 2018.
