Exclusive event for Freemen of the Guild

If you’ve ever wondered how hallmarking and quality control works when it comes to precious metals, then you need to be on this exclusive Guild tour of the Assay Office at Goldsmith’s Hall.

Dave Merry, Head of Training, Education and Trading Standards is the Goldsmith’s Company Assay Office hallmarking expert and will be opening-up the hallowed halls and ‘working departments’ for Freemen of the Guild. He’ll give an exclusive insight into how items are processed through to the various methods of testing precious metals, such as touch testing and XRF analysis and of course, hallmarking.

You’ll get up close and personal with a frontline view of the huge array of tools used for hand marking and watch highly skilled craftsmen in action testing and hallmarking all sorts of precious metal items. The tour lasts two hours and covers all aspects of the industry from the verification of antiques and seized counterfeits and a guide to how laser marking is carried out a visit to our independent laboratory to watch scrap gold being processed (depending on work submitted).

Optional pay as you go lunch -For those who would like to go onto lunch after the tour, there will be a pay as you go booking at a local restaurant.
The tour takes approximately two hours.
Numbers are restricted so please book early.
SECURITY –There is a no photography policy and bags are not allowed on the production floor (there is a safe place to leave them).
